Biography:
The Merlons of Nehemiah were formed in 1992 in Germany. They quickly made a name for themselves when veering sharply from the path taken by many groups born out of that country`s burgeoning early `90s alternative folk-rock scene. While "Deutsche" folk-rock groups like Paddy Goes to Holyhead, An Cat Dubh, Fiddler`s Green and Tapsi Turtles borrowed almost exclusively from their Irish and UK contemporaries the Merlons drew from more far-reaching sources. Utilizing instruments like recorders, lutes, bombarde, dudelsack and drehleyer in addition to fiddle, guitar, bass and drums their style could be described as "Alternative Medieval Mystic Folk Rock." Their sound remained constant throughout their first three albums Cantoney, Eluoami and Romanoir when they were known by their full monicker, The Merlons of Nehemiah. 1996 saw a few changes occur in the band. Not only did they shorten their name to Merlons their musical style underwent a slight overhaul as well. The acoustic, folksy instruments were used far more infrequently as they established more of a modern rock identity. These changes coincided with increasing interest from larger record labels. In fact after 1996`s Water Naked Nature they terminated their longtime affiliation with Musical Tragedies to release one album for BMG Ariola in 1998. That recording, Sinn-Licht, saw an even more drastic departure from their medieval roots and by the time Trance was released in `99 they bore little resemblance to the creative band they were just four years earlier. Also released on the same date as Trance was the live album Midgard which was recorded in 1994 and was essentially Musical Tragedies` tribute to the group`s innovative origins as well as the labels` fond adieu to the Merlons before they seesawed back to BMG.
